35 new trains set for lines 3, 4

THIRTY-FIVE new trains, complete with light detectors to adjust carriage lighting, look set to go into service on Shanghai Metro’s lines 3 and 4 over the next two years.

Their introduction would increase by more than 50 percent the number of trains running on those lines.

The first train of the new model is presently undergoing interior fitting in Changchun, in northern province Jilin, said Metro operator Shanghai Shentong Group yesterday.

Onboard light detectors adjust LED lighting inside carriages according to the surroundings, while the traction system is more powerful.

The train is expected to undergo tests in Shanghai in July. Manufacturing all 35 trains will take two years.

While Shentong said it has yet to decide on a detailed operations plan, the trains are set to have yellow and purple paintwork — the theme colors of lines 3 and 4 respectively.

There are currently around 60 trains on Line 3 and Line 4 and the operator has said that it wants to increase capacity. “A lack of trains is an obstacle,” said Yin Wei, manager of Shentong’s operations management center.
