2 officials warned for overspending

TWO Shanghai officials have been given warnings for violating the eight-point code of conduct drawn up by the Communist Party of China to combat extravagance in the public sector.

Tang Weini, deputy director of the Shanghai Price Certification Center, affiliated to the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission, was reprimanded for authorizing the spending of 20,000 yuan (US$3,270) on bread coupons.

The vouchers were awarded as prizes to workers attending a training program on August 26-29, the city’s disciplinary watchdog said.

The act was a breach of the eight-point code and violated the financial discipline of the Party, the Shanghai Discipline Inspection Commission said.

In a separate case, Wang Leyong, director and Party branch secretary of the Postal Savings Bureau affiliated to Shanghai Post Co, was given a warning after funding a banquet for business seminar delegates.

The bureau spent 4,462 yuan on the event, which was attended by 21 people on August 22, the commission said.

Each of the diners has since been ordered to pay back their share of the cost of the meal.

The eight-point code of conduct, which encourages officials to be thrifty and avoid all forms of extravagance, was issued by the CPC Central Committee in December 2012.

In the year through August, the city’s discipline commission handled 13 violations, resulting in punishments for 16 officials.

Four of them — a headmaster and three company managers — were removed from their posts.
