Decades-old Caoyang Community in Putuo District to undergo major renovation

THE city’s first “worker’s community” located in downtown Putuo District, is to undergo a major renovation after years of disrepair, it was announced yesterday.

The buildings in the Caoyang Community, which were built in the 1950s as homes for model workers, will get additional levels and space so as to improve residents’ living environment, the district planning body said.

Illegal structures in the community, which is home to more than 200 families, will be demolished while barrier-free facilities for wheelchairs will be built.

Among the highlights of the renovation is a new 1,500-meter walkway which will be built along a community creek, replacing the buildings that stand there now. No other details about the project were provided.

The city built 18 “workers’ communities” in the 1950s and many are in a bad condition.

They were built to accommodate Shanghai’s rapidly expanding workforce during the 1950s industrial development. Featuring 30-square-meter apartments, with communal kitchens and bathrooms, the homes were much sought after and therefore offered only to the very best workers.
