19 ambulances on marathon route
TWENTY medical stations and 19 ambulances will line the route of the Shanghai International Marathon on Sunday morning.
Ambulances will be able to reach anyone in difficulty within five minutes, said officials from the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission yesterday.
Two teams of medical staff will also be on patrol to give emergency first aid, while extra medical staff will be placed at the Shanghai Stadium finishing line.
Some 35,000 runners will take part in the full marathon and other races.
He Zhichun from the commission said the medical stations will be close to water stations.
Seven city hospitals located near the route are also ready to receive runners, added He.
The commonest problems encountered by runners include tendon trouble, falls and fatigue, said the official.
Medics will monitor runners and anyone showing signs of dehydration will be given water in good time, He added.
He urged runners to carefully read guidelines sent by the organizers in text messages and put their safety and health first.
“In previous marathons, we had to send ambulance to follow some runners who we could see were having problems but refused to quit,” He said.
Organizers have shifted the date in the hope of better air quality. At last year’s event on December 1, the Air Quality Index rose to heavily polluted by 1pm.
While cool, wet weather is forecast this year, organizers are prepared for warm or cold conditions, with both ice and blankets on hand for runners.
In 2008, a postgraduate student running in the half marathon collapsed and died 200 meters from the finish.
