Young donors offer hope to others

TWO young Shanghai men donated stem cells to help leukemia patients yesterday, International Volunteer Day.

Their donations will go to a 6-year-old boy in neighboring Jiangsu Province and a young leukemia patient in Chongqing, in southwestern China.

Both are said to be in a critical condition and require transplants urgently.

Qiao Chenyi, a 24-year-old bank employee, enrolled in the China Marrow Donor Program in 2010 while at university.

He says the help and support his father, who later died of illness, received in hospital inspired him to volunteer.

“My father received help from other people while in hospital, so I want to use stem cell donation to help others,” Qiao said

Yesterday’s other donor, Zhao Yifan, a 25-year-old medical postgraduate student whose cells will go to the 6-year-old boy, also has a personal connection.

Zhao’s mother is a doctor who specializes in blood disorders and is also a volunteer in the donor program.

“I want my stem cells to save the boy’s life,” Zhao said. “It’s such a good thing to do.”

The Shanghai branch of the Red Cross Society of China, which runs the program, said it took just three months for the whole process.

“The donors never hesitated in agreeing and gave us their full trust and support,” said Red Cross official Zhang Yi.

International Volunteer Day was designated by the United Nations in 1985 and highlights the contributions of organizations and individuals.
