Xuelong heads to Arctic again

CHINA’S research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong, also known as Snow Dragon, took off on its 7th Arctic expedition yesterday from Shanghai with a team of 128 members.

The trip will cover more than 10,000 nautical miles in 78 days.

“We plan to set up 82 research sites during the expedition, including one in the Mendeleev Ridge for the first time,” Li Yuansheng, chief scientist, said. “Though the plan might change depending on the situations there. It is said there will be fewer ice in the Arctic this year.”

Xia Limin, from the State Oceanic Administration, said that scientists will undertake research on marine chemistry, ecology, geology, geophysics and sea ice dynamics.

Xia, who is also the research team leader, said that American and French scientists had been invited to join the research team on the journey.

Li said the observations and research materials will enhance the scientists’ knowledge and understanding on subjects like marine hydrology, marine chemistry and sea ice dynamics in the Arctic Ocean.

It will also provide information on the environment and climate.

The vessel will return to Shanghai around September 26.
