Woman gives birth to baby boy on flight into Pudong
MEDICAL staff at Pudong International Airport had to deal with an unexpected arrival yesterday when a woman gave birth shortly before her flight touched down.
The incident happened aboard China Eastern airlines flight MU587 from Fuzhou in southeast China’s Fujian Province to New York in the United States, which was scheduled to transit through Shanghai, the carrier said in a statement.
The woman, who was more than 35 weeks’ pregnant, was quoted as saying that she felt a sharp pain in her stomach about 15 minutes before the plane was scheduled to land.
While she was in the toilet, her baby son decided he’d waited long enough and made an unscheduled appearance, the statement said.
Cabin crew alerted the airport and a medical team was waiting to board the plane as soon as it landed.
After a routine check, mother and baby were declared fit and well, though both were taken to a nearby hospital for observation, the airline said.
China Eastern recommends women who are more than seven months’ pregnant not to fly, the statement said.
