Winning the fight against breast cancer

MORE than 91 percent of women with breast cancer in the city now live more than five years after diagnosis — a similar survival rate to Western countries.

The reason is early detection, precise diagnosis, regular treatment and effective rehabilitation, officials from Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said yesterday, the eve of Women’s Day today.

Although the incidence of breast cancer is rising because of the aging population and unhealthy lifestyles, the survival rate has been rising 10 percent a decade for the past 30 years.

The health system has been improving and more women are being screened. Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women and has increased 28 percent in the past decade. More than 55,000 women are known to suffer breast cancer — 27.5 percent of all female cancer patients. “It is the cancer with the largest number of survivors,” said doctor Zheng Ying from Shanghai CDC’s tumor prevention and control department.

“The life quality and health management of patients should receive the same attention as prevention and treatment.”
