Weather warning from doctors after man dies of heat stroke

DOCTORS have warned city residents to take care during the current heatwave, after a man died of heat stroke this week and six people were admitted to hospital with serious cases.

The man in his 60s, whose name was not released, was found unconscious in a flower bed on Dongfang Road in the Pudong New Area around midday on Wednesday.

He was admitted to Punan Hospital but was later confirmed dead, the hospital announced yesterday.

In another case, a factory worker rushed to Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital’s Jinshan District branch had a temperature of at least 42 degrees Celsius.

The average normal temperature of a person is 37 degrees.

A doctor, surnamed Li, at Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital’s Songjiang District branch warned of the dangers of the scorching weather.

Li said being in an environment with high temperatures and high humidity for too long will leave the body unable to dissipate heat and result in a surge in body temperature.

Keeping in the shade, avoiding confined spaces without adequate ventilation and drinking plenty of cooling liquids help prevent heat stroke.

Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital Songjiang District branch said a brewery worker and a recycling worker are receiving treatment for heat stroke in its intensive care unit.

Li said hot and humid conditions in the brewery and the recycling worker’s exposure to scorching temperatures led to them falling ill.

“They fainted and were sent to our hospital after being found,” said Li.

Meanwhile, Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital’s Jinshan branch said it had received four people with heat stroke in recent days.

The most serious case was a 36-year-old man, surnamed Cui, who had been working in a factory workshop on a long shift when he fell ill.

After his colleagues noticed his condition, he was sent to a community health center and later transferred to hospital.

Doctor Wu Jianbian said when Cui was admitted his body temperature was 42 degrees Celsius. It may have been even higher as this was the highest reading on the thermometer, said Wu.

After emergency treatment, Cui was out of danger the next day and his condition continues to improve, added Wu.

During the recent hot spell, city hospitals have also seen a rise in cases of asthma and stomach bugs.

Ren’ai Hospital said the increase in stomach bugs was particularly affecting young people.

It said some had stayed in extremely cold air-conditioned rooms for too long or had too many cold drinks or ice creams, leading to stomach problems.

Mostly dry and sunny days with temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees are set to last another week, forecasters said yesterday.

Temperatures reached up to 38 degrees yesterday, and today will bring no respite from the scorching weather, with a strong subtropical high pressure front continuing to dominate city weather.

The high for the first four days of August will be 37 to 38 degrees.

The subtropical high pressure front will move north slightly on August 5 and 6, leading to a 1 to 2 degree dip in temperatures. Afternoon thundershowers are possible over the next few days, said forecasters.
