Tibetan kids visit city for hip surgery
FOUR underprivileged Tibetan children left Shanghai yesterday after undergoing surgery on their dislocated hips at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
With the help of Shanghai officials working in Tibet, the four children, aged between 17 months and 9 years old, traveled to the city with their families earlier this month for the free treatment.
Dr Wang Zhigang, director of the hospital’s orthopedics department, said the surgery was necessary because they were not treated soon enough.
“Early detection and early treatment is the key,” Wang said. “There is a higher incidence of hip dislocation in Tibet. The incidence rate is one in every 500 to 1,000 newborn children in China. Widespread screening is needed.”
Surgery is the only way to correct the problem after the patient reaches 18 months.
