The beat goes on for baby heart patient

A 2-month-old heart patient made history last week when she became the youngest person in China to successfully undergo radio frequency ablation therapy, according to Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.

The baby girl, nicknamed Juanzi, was diagnosed with an extremely rapid heart rate — 280 beats per minute — 10 days after birth. All medications administered failed to correct her condition — called cardiac arrhythmia — which can become life threatening if left untreated.

Her doctors then decided to try radio frequency ablation, which involves inserting electrodes into the heart through a vein to destroy abnormal electrical pathways that cause cardiac arrhythmia.

The hospital set a new record when it administered the therapy to a 13-month-old boy late last year. However, Juanzi’s condition posed a much greater challenge because her heart is much smaller, which meant they had to make do with just one electrode instead of three when they performed the procedure on August 9.

She was discharged in good health yesterday.
