Smart approach to medical waste

THE nation’s first Internet-based system to monitor the whole process of hospital medical waste has been launched in the city’s Minhang District.

It is designed both to enhance administration and to prevent people illegally stealing and selling medical waste, officials said yesterday.

The trial in Minhang will be promoted across the city next year.

The radio frequency identification, or RFID, technology keeps a record of medical waste collection, weighing, storing and transportation. Staff swipe a barcode on a disposable waste bag. All data is then transferred to the headquarters at Minhang District Health Supervision, which processes and monitors the data and warns hospitals of anything irregular.

Officials said the system prevents mismanagement and misuse of medical waste collection.

“Staff just weighed the waste by ordinary scales and recorded the figures on handwriten notes, which were difficult for statistics, analysis and administration,” said Yao Liqun, Vice Director of Minhang District Health Supervision Agency. “The new system keeps records of each step and all medical waste is weighed by electric scales to prevent error. We also can trace any mistake or illegal practice through the system.”

He added the agency had received reports in the past two years that medical waste had been found by roadsides. “Previously, we couldn’t identify the source of such waste,” he said. Even though it was known some staff were selling medical waste, the culprits could not be found, he said. “After adopting the new system this year, all procedure is clear and strict.” No reports of misuse had been received.

Zhou Fengming from Zhuanqiao Neighborhood Health Center said the new system was convenient and easy to process.
