City doctors complete country’s first heart valve surgery with 3D endoscope

DOCTORS in Shanghai completed the nation’s first heart valve surgery using a 3D endoscope on Friday.

Shanghai Yoda Cardio-Thoracic Hospital said today its doctors successfully completed the one-hour operation on a 40-year-old woman. They added she is now in a stable condition.

An endoscope is a medical instrument that can be inserted into the body to get a view of internal parts. For years, doctors have used less advanced 2D endoscopes.

“The 3D endoscope allows surgeon to get a better look at the organ and sick area,” said Dr Cheng Yunge, the hospital’s chief surgeon. “With this enhanced vision, doctors can be more accurate when cutting and suturing, which reduces bleeding. This means patient’s have to endure less pain.”
