Registration for 2016 Shanghai Int'l Marathon kicks off on Monday

REGISTRATION for the 2016 Shanghai International Marathon opens at 10am next Monday, announced the organizers.

This year's event on October 30 has set 38,000 places in four categories -- 3,000 more than last year. Quotas will be allocated by a lucky draw once registration closes.

There are 20,000 places available for the 42.2-kilometer marathon — 5,000 more than last year. 8,000 places have been set for the 21km half marathon. The 10k and 5k race each features 5,000 runners.

Organizers said the quotas for full marathon had been increased to meet the demand of participants.

Races start at 7am at Financial Square on Bund. Full and half marathons finish at Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District.

Runners can register at the official website www.shang-ma.com — available in Chinese and English — or through Apple and Android race apps.

Places will be allocated by lottery and the results announced on September 9.

The entry fee for the marathon and half marathon is 100 yuan (US$15.7) for Chinese competitors and 300 yuan for foreign runners.

For shorter races, it is 60 yuan for Chinese and 200 yuan for foreign runners.

Last year's event attracted 6,276 foreign participants, counting for 17.9 percent of all competitors.
