‘Poisoned’ baby recovering well

A BABY born with life-threatening blood poisoning 10 days ago is now in a stable condition after being connected to a life support machine at Shanghai Children’s Hospital.

Just hours after his birth on August 9, the infant’s health deteriorated rapidly, the hospital claimed in a press release issued yesterday.

According to Cao Yun, director of the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, the baby contracted blood poisoning from bacteria in his mother’s birth canal. When the child’s skin turned blue, his parents rushed him to the hospital, where he was attached to an extracorporeal life support system, the press release said.

The hospital did not say how many days the baby spent attached to the machine, but said he is now in the neonatal intensive care unit and that his vital signs are stable.

Calls to the hospital for more details went unanswered yesterday.
