Organs of brain-dead driver donated

A 45-YEAR-OLD bus driver became the latest person to donate his organs to take the number of organ donors in Shanghai to 222.
The driver, Ling Yun, was declared brain dead after a brain hemorrhage. His organs — both his kidneys, corneas and liver — were successfully transplanted onto patients, officials from Huashan Hospital confirmed yesterday.
Ling thus became donor number 222 in Shanghai since a national program to encourage and regulate voluntary donations was launched in 2013, the Shanghai branch of the Red Cross Society of China said yesterday.
Ling fainted at home while making breakfast for his wife and daughter. He was rushed to Liqun Hospital and diagnosed with brain hemorrhage. Since the surgery was risky and complicated, Ling was moved to Huashan Hospital.
But doctors at Huashan said his condition was irreversible.
The hospital’s organ procurement officials then approached Ling’s family and explained about organ donation. Ling’s family gave their consent, which benefitted five people.
All the transplants were successfully, Red Cross officials said.
“My husband is living in another five people. It is a good way of prolonging his life,” said Xu Xinju, Ling’s wife. “It is the biggest comfort for me.”
Xu said she will tell her 5-year-old daughter that her father was a good man and did a great deed by giving life to three patients and making another two people see the world again.
