Op for woman who touched hearts
A 26-year-old woman who lost her nose and lips because of infections as a child underwent her first surgery to restore her face at Shanghai No.9 People’s Hospital yesterday.
Jin Qi, who grew up in a village in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, and who works as a graphic designer, aroused attention on the Internet after posting her life’s story on zhihu.com, a Chinese question-and-answer website.
Online users have helped to fund her treatment.
The treatment, which will last from 18 months to two years, will provide Jin with a new nose and lips created through a technique known in plastic and reparative surgery as “tissue expansion.”
This means that the new skin and other tissues needed for her facial restructuring will be caused to grow on her own body and then transplanted.
The hospital said it had successfully conducted 42 similar surgeries with this technique before, but Jin’s case was very rare because her facial deformation had happened at a very young age.
“It’s harder to create the nose and lips compatible to her face than in the cases of most of our adult patients because her facial bones and soft tissue have become enormously deformed or wanting over the years,” said Zhu Ming, a doctor on the team responsible for treating Jin.
Zhu said the nose was more challenging because even the nasal mucosa had to be developed from her body. The skin of both her nose and lips would be grown on her chest.
“The patient will have a larger than normal nose after the entire first phase of treatment is finished, and then we will ‘fine tune’ her facial features,” she said.
Zhu said the treatment cost about 400,000 yuan (US$57,960), but the hospital would give her a discount. Jin told the hospital that online supporters had collected 250,000 yuan for her.
Jin had resigned from her job in Shenzhen and moved to Shanghai, hoping to find a position here while going through the treatment, Zhu said.
