New trauma evaluation system leads to quicker treatment

The Songjiang District Medical Emergency Center is the first in the city to establish a pre-hospital trauma evaluation system, officials told a hospital development forum today.

The system was developed in cooperation with hospitals in its region and will ensure emergency patients are treated quicker and more effectively.

Headed by the Songjiang branch of Shanghai General Hospital, formerly known as Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital, the system consists of five district-level hospitals and 14 community hospitals.

There are 50 ambulances in the area including 12 on 24-hour standby.

Under the system, ambulance doctors can contact hospitals about a patient’s medical history and the hospital headquarters can call appropriate doctors to the emergency ward in time. Previously, experts were not called until emergency doctors had checked a patient.

Officials said patients would receive proper treatment about 2 minutes faster through the system. They also said the mortality rate had dropped from 4.2 percent in 2013 to last year’s 2.3 percent because of the system.
