Musical therapy for babiews

PREMATURE babies born at Shanghai’s Children’s Hospital of Fudan University are the first in China to receive therapy treatment involving music and their mothers’ sounds.

The pediatric hospitalsaid music therapy was a supportive treatment to regular medical care to newborn babies with brain injuries resulting from premature delivery.

The Fudan hospital has adopted a multi-stimulant program — sound, light, massage and taste — in its music therapy to help premature babies to speed up nerve cell repairing and development. Babies with a birth weight lower than 1.8 kilograms or delivery before 32 weeks of pregnancy are being targeted by the program, which monitors their brains before, during and after music therapy.

Over 20 million children are born in China every year, with 10 percent of them born prematurely. This trend is expected to increase as more women have babies later.
