Mother, 45, saved after 9-hour operation

A 45-year-old woman’s life was saved after suffering a highly risky obstetric complication while giving birth, Xinhua Hospital announced.

The patient was removed to a normal ward yesterday after staying in the intensive care unit for over two weeks following a nine-hour emergency operation, and a blood transfusion amounting to two-and-a-half times her own blood.

Both the woman and her newborn daughter, who was delivered on June 6, are in stable condition.

Hospital officials said her age, a cesarean history and repeated abortions, were major risky causes for severe obstetric complications.

Since last year the government has allowed couples to have a second child, and as a result the city’s hospitals say there have been about a 20 percent increase of pregnant women with highly risky conditions.

Most of these cases involve women older than 35, who are expecting a second child and who have had cesarean surgery.

The patient, who was identified as Yu Ping, delivered her son 21 years ago in home town of Anhui Province through surgery. She was found to have a pernicious placenta previa during the prenatal check after being pregnant with her daughter.

It is one of the most serious complications of cesarean operation. The incidence is only 1.7 in every 10,000 pregnancies among younger women, but it occurs among every 20 pregnancies among women older than 35 with a history of cesarean operation.

Yu was hospitalized in Xinhua after 24 weeks of pregnancy. She started to have severe bleeding on June 6. Though the fetus was only 32 weeks, doctors decided they had to terminate the pregnancy.

Yu’s husband expressed thanks for saving his wife and daughter.
