More water pumped back to stop sinking

SHANGHAI is increasing the quantity of water it pumps back into the ground to counteract subsidence caused by extraction, officials said yesterday.

While last year the quantity of water pumped back was 3.7 times that taken out, this year it will be 4.6 times.

Due to over-extraction from underground water sources between the 1920s to 70s, Shanghai has suffered subsidence.

Most underground water is extracted for industrial and agricultural use, such as in the textile industry, crop irrigation and food production.

In 2003, Shanghai extracted 100 million cubic meters of water, returning a 10th of this.

In 2011, the water pumped back exceeded extracted water for the first time and last year the city extracted 5.73 million cubic meters while returning 21 million cubic meters.

Shanghai’s water watchdog said 5 million cubic meters will be extracted this year, and 23 million cubic meters put back.

The number of deep wells has been reduced from some 1,000 a decade ago to 200.

With water pipelines expanding to rural areas, demand for water from local underground sources also dropped.

Extracted water sources will remain as backup to water piped in from further afield, said officials.

Last year, the city began constructing 300 deep wells in public places such as stadiums and parks for emergency use.
