Doctor suffers concussion, nausea after being attacked by mother over baby's test results

A DOCTOR at Shanghai Children’s Hospital was attacked by a mother who was unhappy with her explanation of the results of tests on her baby, officials said yesterday.

Emergency doctor Kuang Xinyu was struck in the face by the woman, whose name was not released, at around 6:25pm on Sunday, said hospital officials.

Police said because the woman is breastfeeding, she would not face punishment.

Earlier that day, she had taken her 2-month-old baby to the hospital where the child had a bladder test and was put on an intravenous drip before being sent home.

But the mother returned alone to the hospital’s emergency department in early evening and without registering approached Kuang.

While the doctor had not been involved in the test, she gave an explanation of the results.

But the mother was not satisfied with this and tried to grab her name tag, said officials.

When Kuang left the room the mother followed her and struck her on the face, they added.

Both were taken by police for questioning.

Kuang suffered an injury to the left side of her face, minor concussion and nausea.

Putuo District police said the woman would normally be detained but was released as she was a recent mother.

“A woman who is pregnant or still breastfeeding is exempt from the punishment of detention according to the law,” said police officer Wang Miao.

This was the second time in recent weeks that medical staff at the hospital have been attacked by a patient’s family.

On June 9, a nurse was struck on the face by a member of the family of a 3-year-old boy after she told them they must wait two hours for a test as the child had just eaten.

Summer sees a surge in numbers at city hospitals’ outpatient and emergency departments.

Children with colds make up half the patients seen by some emergency departments.
