Medical school aims to fill health care gap
A NEW medical school dedicated to the training of nurses and physiotherapists will accept its first intake in September, an official said yesterday.
Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, in the Pudong New Area of the city, will welcome its first 210 students in just a few months’ time, but by 2020, it is hoped the number of people on the campus will have grown to about 12,000, said its president Huang Gang.
Shanghai already has five medical schools, but their primary focus is producing doctors, he said.
“Shanghai’s capabilities in surgery are as good as in any western city, but in the field of physiotherapy, we lag far behind,” he said.
“Doctors can repair people’s bodies, but we lack the professionals who can help patients to learn how to use them again, how to regain their fitness and motor skills,” he said.
“This absence of trained personnel means that all the good that is done on the operating table is often lost during patient recovery and rehabilitation,” he said.
According to World Health Organization, a city with the population of Shanghai should have between 10,000 and 15,000 physiotherapists. The actual number is 756, Huang said.
“There is a widespread lack of awareness of the need for such professionals,” he said.
“Physiotherapy not only has a huge role to play in helping people to recover from injury, but also in the care of the elderly and disabled. The government, the medical profession and the public need to understand this,” he said.
To ensure graduates of the new school are properly equipped to deal with the many challenges they will face, the curricula of all courses will be geared to practical learning, Huang said.
“Our aim is to teach people how to solve any problem they might face in the real world,” he said.
