Man, 18, receives transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood

AN 18-year-old man received the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood yesterday at Shanghai General Hospital, the 2,000th of its kind with umbilical cord blood provided by the China Stem Cell Group Co.

The man surnamed Li was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November last year and needed hematopoietic stem urgently.

The company, largest of its kind in China, found four matches from its umbilical cord blood banks while the one in Chongqing was most suitable.

The company staff took the blood, placed in a liquid nitrogen container, to Shanghai on Sunday after a two-hour flight from Chongqing.

It is the 27th transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood conducted in Shanghai General Hospital.

China’s first transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood was carried out in the hospital 16 years ago, also with the umbilical cord blood provided by China Stem Cell Group Co in Jiading District. The female receiver who had suffered from severe aplastic anemia is now a 27-year-old English teacher.
