Local baby dies after taking TB vaccine, probe by health watchdog underway

THE city's health authorities said today that they are investigating the death of a baby who died yesterday after receiving a vaccine at a hospital in Baoshan District.

The three-month-old boy developed symptoms of high fever, twitching and coma after having the vaccine against tuberculosis at the Baoshan District Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Hospital on July 28, his Shanghainese mother, surnamed Wan said.

Wan said the boy had a skin test three days before the vaccination, and there was no abnormal result.

After having the vaccine, Wan left the hospital with the baby as the doctor did not ask for further observation.

The boy started crying and showed symptom of a high fever about one hour later.

Wan and her husband took the boy to the hospital again, and his body temperature slightly dropped to 39.1 degrees after taking medicine.

But he started crying again that afternoon when they were back home, and his situation worsened and started twitching.

"He lost consciousness then, and his arms were stiff," Wan said.

He was taken to Shanghai Xinhua Hospital for treatment the same day of the vaccination, and died yesterday afternoon.

Wan called on authorities to keep the medical record of his son and the same batch of the vaccine, and conduct an investigation.

"We suspect that the nurse's operation and the vaccine are to blame for his death," Wan said.

The vaccine the boy took was made by the Chengdu Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd, according to the Baoshan District Commission of Health and Family Planning.

The vaccine should expire in April next year and a sample been sent for tests, the commission said.

The boy had no contraindications and the nurse who vaccinated him has certificates, the hospital said.

The vaccination procedure was in line with standards with pre-check conducted, and parents also signed agreement beforehand, it said.

Investigation is underway.
