Jiao Tong professors build portable oxygen device to help heal skin wounds

Shanghai Jiao Tong University professors have built a portable oxygen device to help heal wounds such as bedsores and chronic skin injuries.

The device, about the size of an adult hand, can produce pure oxygen, which has proven effective in treating infected skin wounds. Patients use a tube to connect the device to a wounded area, which is then covered with a medical patch.

Two US-based firms are the only others in the world that have built such a device, Hu Mingruo, associate professor at the Institute of Fuel Cell at Jiao Tong University and leader of the research team, said today.

Hu said patients could wear the device all the time and treat any wound on the body, giving it an edge over traditional oxygen chambers that can only treat the whole body or limbs.

Hu discovered full cells can produce pure oxygen during a failed experiment and decided to make the device.

The Jiangsu FDA licensed the device for use in March. It will be used in the province’s hospitals.

Daily costs for the device will be approximately 100 yuan (US$16) to 200 yuan, compared to 100 yuan for 10 minutes of treatment in an oxygen chamber. The exact price will be decided by hospitals, Hu said.
