Ignorance over mental health

MORE than half of people who live in Shanghai believe mental disease is a self-induced problem and do not realize that receiving professional help is necessary, according to a survey released yesterday, the World Mental Health Day.

The survey of more than 1,900 people, conducted by Shanghai Mental Health Center, found 62 percent of Shanghai residents thought depression and anxiety were just caused by pressure, and serious mental diseases were just problems in the mind.

However, experts say mental disease is an illness related with biology and genetics and doctors’ checkups and guidance are key to successful treatment.

“Some common mental illnesses like depression and anxiety are partly caused by biologic reasons, and not many people know about it before doctors’ diagnosis,” said Luo Yanli, deputy director of Tongji Hospital’s neurology department.

Luo added depression, anxiety and insomnia were among the most common mental disorders.
