Ignorance is rife over hepatitis risk: study

ABOUT 30 percent of people mistakenly believe they can be infected by sharing a meal with a Hepatitis B or C carrier, but only about half are aware of the danger of sharing a toothbrush or shaver, a survey released yesterday found.

Published by the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention ahead of World Hepatitis Day tomorrow, the study found about 20 percent of respondents are prejudiced against hepatitis carriers and most of them knew little about methods of transmission.

The Center has conducted a series of events to educate the public about hepatitis, including an online site which collects anonymous questions and requests from residents, including those with hepatitis.

More than 200 messages have been received in four months, focussing mainly on treatment, cost, drugs and social bias. The city has 37 residential communities for people with hepatitis and their families.
