Hospitals told to have pediatric wards

SHANGHAI’S first-tier hospitals will cope with increasing demand for pediatric services by setting up dedicated departments by the end of 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), said Han Zheng, the city’s Party secretary, yesterday.

Han spoke during a group discussion with the Pudong New Area’s lawmakers at the annual session of the Shanghai People’s Congress.

Han said with the relaxation of the single-child policy, there will be a greater need for pediatricians.

“I saw many child patients waiting in the crowded pediatric departments on television. They looked miserable,” said Han, adding that almost all hospitals and neighborhood clinics in the city could provide pediatric services. Many hospitals have eliminated their pediatric departments, he said, making it hard for parents seeking care for their sick children.

Dr Liu Zhongmin, a lawmaker who is also president of Shanghai East Hospital, said some medical schools have eliminated pediatrics as a major because of the declining number of children to treat over the past few years.

Liu added that heavy workloads and low pay have also played a role in pushing pediatricians into other specialties.

Han added that the government must do its best to find a solution in the 13th Five-Year Plan period.
