Hospital to focus on rehabilitation
A DISTRICT-LEVEL general hospital is being converted into a specialist center providing post-operation and stroke rehabilitation and therapy for seniors and people with disabilities.
Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital in Huangpu District will offer treatment for patients who have undergone surgery on fractures and operations affected nerves and muscle, officials said yesterday.
The hospital, which was previously Dongnan Hospital, will also provide rehabilitation for people who have had strokes and therapy for children with autism and cerebral palsy.
Treatment could include language and balance therapies.
Currently being decorated and fitted with equipment, the hospital on Quxi Rd will have 200 beds, though it is expected that the bulk of patients will be outpatients, said officials.
Meanwhile, Huangpu District is establishing a network of large hospitals, Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital and neighborhood health centers to offer a joined-up rehabilitation service and better use limited resources, said officials.
Officials said this will allow for patients to be transferred quickly according to their situation and improve surgery outcomes through proper rehabilitation services.
Currently, patients are often simply sent home after an operation.
There is a huge shortage of rehabilitation specialists and other therapists in China.
While some 50 million people with disabilities and 70 million seniors require therapies, China has only some 20,000 medical staff working in this area, figures show.
China currently has 5,600 professional rehabilitation therapists, but needs 350,000.
“The establishment of the rehabilitation hospital is part of the health reform in which big hospitals are responsible for complicated diseases and conditions while patients go to neighborhood hospitals for other treatment,” said Tian Zhuoping, director of Huangpu District Health and Family Planning Commission.
Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital will also be a teaching facility of Jiao Tong University’s School of Medicine.
It opens at the year end.
