Hospital sets new birth record

SHANGHAI First Maternity and Infant Hospital said it delivered more than 33,000 babies last year, setting a record and making it No. 1 in the nation, hospital president Dr Wan Xiaoping said.

The surge in deliveries was due to the change in government policy in 2015 to allow couples to have a second child, which prompted an increase in births among couples in their 30s and 40s.

However, the tendency for a second child slowed this year and all hospitals saw a drop in births, he told the Shanghai International Obstetrics and Gynecology Forum over the weekend.
