Help for local hospitals to treat children

SHANGHAI Children’s Medical Center will launch a series of measures this year to help other hospitals improve the capability of their pediatric departments, said Jiang Zhongyi, president of the hospital.

One measure was to compile books to guide pediatricians in dealing with 89 commonly seen diseases, he said.

The renowned hospital would also use Internet technology to carry out remote medical consultation with other hospitals to help them to improve their own capability during real-case diagnosis and treatment, and transfer those who cannot be treated locally to the Children’s Medical Center. The hospital will continue organizing training for pediatricians under a trial program that allows doctors to serve at several medical institutions.

The medical center will also set up a birth defects screening network to guide grass-rooted community clinics to undertake primary screening.

Jiang said screening of congenital heart disease and congenital deafness among children would be done this year, expanding to screening other diseases later.

Shanghai is committed to improving the capability of pediatrics after citizens complained they had to wait too long to see pediatricians at major hospitals. Citizens also said they were unwilling to visit other institutions such as community clinics because they lacked outstanding facilities.

The city’s Party chief Han Zheng has urged lawmakers to pay more attention to the problem and ensure each child receives a convenient, high-quality, balanced and sustainable medical service.

Shanghai Children’s Medical Center last year joined hands with 41 hospitals in Pudong New Area and Fengxian District to set up a pediatric medical association, providing training for doctors and sharing medical resources. Between them the hospitals served more than 3 million children last year.

Asthma treatment is one example of such cooperation.

Shanghai Children’s Medical Center worked out standardized treatment procedures, equipped community clinics with the necessary medicines and facilities to enable patients receive the same medical service at nearby clinics as that offered by the popular hospital that could be an hour’s drive away.
