Heart attack survivor thanks ambulance team

A GERMAN man who suffered a heart attack at his home in August yesterday visited the medics who saved his life.

Erhard Klaus, 53, an engineer, went to the Minhang District Medical Emergency Center to thank ambulance doctor Xu Jian and present him with a pennant reading in Chinese: “It was you that created the miracle of life.”

One of Klaus’ colleagues called the emergency services after the German complained of chest pains in the early hours of August 29.

An ambulance was dispatched and arrived at Klaus’ home soon after. When Xu saw Klaus, he was having difficulty breathing and was sweating profusely. The doctor performed an electrocardiogram and confirmed the patient had a heart attack.

The medical team then took Klaus to the Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital.

“People who have had heart attacks are susceptible to cardiac arrest, so I kept the defibrillator close to hand in the ambulance,” Xu said.

Just after 1am, while still in the ambulance, Klaus lost consciousness, and the monitoring equipment showed his heart had stopped beating. Xu used the defibrillator and his patient regained consciousness. Klaus then suffered a second arrest and was again revived.

By the time the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the patient’s condition had stabilized. Klaus remained in hospital for a week, by which time he had made a full recovery and was fit enough to go home.

Klaus said yesterday that he knew Xu had helped save his life.

“I’m very grateful to the doctors and emergency team,” he said.

“I had a similar experience in Germany five years ago, but things were more serious this time, so I was glad to be in safe hands.”
