Health program trial for seniors

RESIDENTS over 60 years old are being encouraged to participate in a trial program later this year by signing service agreements with community, district and city hospitals.

The seniors can avail of discounted service and lower drug bill for treatment in the three-level system. They can also enjoy quicker transfers between different levels of hospitals depending on the seriousness of the disease, officials from Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said.

The program is to attract people with common and chronic diseases to go to community hospitals, which can offer more individualized service and health education and direct patients to appropriate experts in superior hospitals.

Patients being transferred from community hospital to a bigger hospital under the program will also enjoy cheaper medical bill.

Data showed Shanghai residents visit hospital over 9 times a year and people over 60 years cover 57 percent of local visits, the commission said.
