HFMD vaccines for children now available in Shanghai

VACCINES against children’s hand, foot and mouth disease, an infectious disease mainly targets children below five, is available in the city, announced Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Children can receive vaccination at neighborhood health centers.

The vaccine, a China developed shots, targets EV71, a virus causing 40 percent of hand, foot and mouth disease cases in the nation and the reason for the majority of serious and death cases of HFMD, said Shanghai CDC.

The vaccine is not covered by the nation’s compulsory vaccination plan. So parents should pay for the two shots of the entire vaccination program. Each shot is about 200 yuan (US$30). Children are recommended to receive the shots before five years old and had better finish the shots before 12 months old for better and in-time protection.

The disease is spread through direct contact with fluid from a patient’s blisters, or droplets from the nose and throat. Typical symptoms are a rash on the hands or feet and a fever. It reaches peak season in the city from April to June.
