H1N1 rises to top spot, but no fear of epidemic

THE H1N1 flu virus has become the major influenza strain in the city this winter and there has been a rise in the number of cases this month, officials from the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said yesterday.
It is the first time the virus has been the most prevalent strain since the World Health Organization declared an end to an H1N1 epidemic in August 2010.
Local experts said, however, there have been no mutations, and that there is no evidence of an epidemic.
Dr Chen Jian from the CDC’s infectious disease prevention and control department said the public needn’t panic as the virus is seasonal and already well monitored.
The reason for its prevalence this year is because of a reduction in immunity levels among local people, unnamed experts said.
Chen said people with low immunity levels, like the elderly and children, should be aware of the risks.
Officials from the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center said it had not seen a significant rise in the number of flu patients.
