Gym won’t pay over kid swimmer bugs
A GYM is refusing to compensate the parents of four kindergarten classmates who got urinary tract infections after swimming in its pool which was later found to contain dirty water.
Their parents are claiming compensation for medical expenses and the return of fees for swimming lessons at Wanxuan Aerobic Life Plaza in the Pudong New Area.
Following their complaints, the Pudong New Area health inspection agency took samples from the pool and found the water failed to meet standards due to levels of chlorine, urine and bacteria.
Wanxuan Aerobic Life Plaza was told to remedy this.
However, gym officials refuse to accept that the girls’ infections were caused by bacteria in the water. They instead claim that the children’s general health was to blame.
The mother of a five-year-old girl told Xinmin Evening News on Tuesday that her daughter began swimming lessons with three kindergarten classmates on June 30, each paying 1,200 yuan (US$194) for 10 lessons.
One girl developed a urinary tract infection and an ear infection on July 8, said the mother.
Her own daughter had fever in mid July, while the other two girls also became ill last month.
Shanghai has around 600 swimming pools. A total of 483 were inspected last month and 17 received penalties.
