Genetic tests offered over muscular dystrophy
People who have muscular dystrophy patients in their family can contact Shanghai Charity Foundation to get free genetic tests, Zhu Changqing, founder of the Neuro-Muscular Disease Association of China (MDA China), told Shanghai Daily on Wednesday.
June 21 is celebrated worldwide as the global day of recognition of ALS/MND, an inherited genetic disorder of the muscles that has no cure.
Zhu, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in 1993, founded MDA China in 2002.
She said dozens of families have sought help with genetic tests since last year when the program was introduced in cooperation with Shanghai Children's Hospital and the Beijing Genomics Institute.
There are about 4.5 million NMD patients in China, 50,000 of them in Shanghai, Zhu said.
She can be contacted at 13701830339.
