Fudan University scientists and Harvard experts find gene in ovarian failure

FUDAN University announced today that its scientists teamed up with experts from Harvard University to successfully identify a gene responsible for recessive primary ovarian insufficiency.

The discovery was published at the latest version of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Ovarian insufficiency is a failure of the ovary to function adequately in a woman younger than 40, in its role either as an endocrine organ or as a reproductive organ, according to Medscape.com.

Experts found that the mutation of gene HFM1 is the cause for the premature ovarian failure, which takes place in 1 percent of women.

Both animal models and patient studies confirmed the discovery.

Such a discovery offers new grounds for the condition’s further clinical study, experts said.
