Fudan Uni breaks down the barriers between TCM, Western styles

SEVEN new research centers were established by the Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine at Fudan University by breaking walls between original colleges, departments and research centers and integrating all their resources.

The decision was announced at an April 28 summit about integrating of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.

The new research centers cover various aspects, including theory verification, therapies and medicine. They are expected to delve deeply into traditional Chinese medicine that is known as our national treasure to generate achievements with international influence and to build up a world-leading discipline, said the university.

The institute was established last year with seven sub-institutes as part of Shanghai’s efforts to build up peak disciplines and the new research centers are expected to further take it to a world-class level.

The new facilities include one center for research on ethnologic traditional medicine, one for research on standards of integrated medicine, and another for health and medicopsychology.

“Traditional Chinese medicine includes Tibetan medicine, Mongolian medicine, Uighur Medicine and medical systems of other ethnic groups,” said Dong Jingcheng, dean of the Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. “The ethnic groups all have their own cultural heritage and traditional medicine. Some still take up large market shares. But there is little research about them.”

He said that there were also some concepts that were not accurate enough in traditional Chinese medicine and it had influenced its development. Therefore, he had been looking for common features in different medical systems to promote their integration and development.

The research centers have not only broken the walls inside Fudan, but also will join hands with other universities and institutes in China.
