Forum looks at mixed treatment for breast cancer

ABOUT 70 percent of local patients with breast cancer have received a combined treatment of Western methods and traditional Chinese medicine, which can reduce the side effects of Western therapy and help to improve patients’ life quality.

This was announced at the first international breast disease Western and traditional medicine treatment forum.

More than 300 medical experts from home and abroad participated in the forum, held at Shanghai Longhua Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital yesterday.

“Breast cancer is a type of cancer with long-term survival, which means patients will receive regular and long-time chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Both have side effects,” said Dr Qin Yuenong, director of Longhua’s breast disease department.

“TCM can play a very effective role to reduce such adverse reactions. Herbal soup, acupuncture and herbal applications in line with different symptoms can reduce patients’ discomfort and also help them receive regular Western therapy,” said Qin. “TCM also can help cancer from spreading and relapsing.”

In addition to treatment, TCM experts also spoke of research on dietary therapy for breast cancer prevention and control.

They told the forum that a small amount of soybean products can prevent breast cancer, but “excessive intake of soybean food can be harmful,” said Dr Liu Sheng, a leading breast disease specialist.
