Donations pour in for man who risked life for neighbors

LOCAL residents, government workers and charity organizations raised over 200,000 yuan (US$32,258) as donations for 25-year-old Wang Haibin, who was seriously burned while trying to alert the neighbors during a fire in his residential building.

The Huacao Town government in Minhang District contributed another 200,000 yuan to cover the medical costs at Ruijin Hospital.

Hospital officials said Wang had suffered over 80 percent burns. While his condition remains serious, he was getting better.

“Wang will undergo the first skin transplant surgery tomorrow and the total medical cost may be one million yuan,” said Zhu Fan, an official at the hospital.

On June 16, a fire broke out at about 1:45am at the residential building where Wang lives with his parents and grandmother. After he discovered the smoke and saw the fire he alerted his family and rushed out to alert his neighbors, knocking at every door.

As the residents woke up to Wang’s efforts and took the necessary precaution, he suffered first-degree burns himself as he ran down the stairs and tried to open the locked gate.

No other person was injured in the fire while Wang was rushed to the hospital.

The Huacao government said it was carrying out repairs on the damaged building.

Wang’s grandmother caught pneumonia after inhaling smoke during the fire. She is resting at home under the care of neighborhood commission, volunteers and neighbors.

Wang’s parents are staying in hospital.

The family hails from Jiangsu Province and have very little source of income. Local charity organizations and governments have been organizing donations to help them out.

“I have received many calls from people who want to help Wang and his family,” said Bao Yungang of Shanghai Charity Foundation’s Minhang branch. “We have set up special fund for Wang.”

The government has also urged the insurance company to speed up the compensation.
