Doctors' warning to young women: DIY lip enhancement trick doesn’t create lips like Angelina Jolie's but instead risks of bruising and infections

DOCTORS are warning young women not to try a do-it-yourself lip enhancement technique that has become trendy because it can cause bruising and infections.

Some young women are buying lip pumps from online stores while others simply suck their lips into a bottle to make them swell up and look fuller.

However, the trick doesn’t create lips like Angelina Jolie’s or Kylie Jenner’s but rather sore, bruised and inflated mouths. Some people have required treatment by doctors.

Shanghai Time Plastic Surgery Hospital officials said today that a female university student surnamed Yu went to the hospital with a swollen mouth.

“Her lips turned swollen and blue because blood fills up and they can become infected,” said Xu Liping, the hospital’s president. “People who want to have pillowy lips can get an injection of lip filler in qualified hospitals and clinics instead of trying these types of things.”

Some women in the West started the fad, which spread online quickly. Pictures of women with before and after pictures are available on social media.

A lip pump can be purchased for around 10 yuan (US$1.61) online.
