Doctors promote prostate cancer tumor marker

Medical experts promoted the benefits of a tumor marker for prostate cancer at a conference today as it can greatly improve chances of early diagnosis and give men a better chance of beating the disease.

Prostate Specific Antigen can be used in health checkups for men over 45 years old with risk factors like a family history of prostate cancer, doctors said at the medical conference.

PSA screening is still new in China, said doctor Sun Zhongquan from Huadong Hospital’s urology department.

“People don’t feel any problems during the early stage of prostate cancer. Most patients aren’t diagnosed until the late stage, which makes it harder to treat and the survival rate is low.”

He said PSA screening greatly improves early diagnosis, reducing the number of patients who reach the late stage by about 30 percent, according to research in Europe.
