Colorectal cancer rates on rise

THE incidence of colorectal cancer in Shanghai residents has soared in the past 50 years and is now the second-most common form of cancer among both men and women in the city, a local doctor said yesterday.

Speaking at an industry forum, cancer specialist Dr Cai Sanjun said the prevalence of the disease is now about 56 cases per 100,000 people.

In the 1960s, the rate was under nine per 100,000, he said.

More than 8,000 new cases are reported in the city every year, he said, adding that the vast majority have gone beyond the early stages and are therefore much harder to treat.

“Early detection is vital as it allows time to begin a comprehensive treatment program,” Cai said.

In an effort to boost early detection rates, hospitals have since 2013 offered free screening for colorectal cancer to all residents aged over 50.

Almost 1.8 million people have taken advantage of the service.
