City’s male HIV cases of the younger age group increase 80% from last year: health watchdog
THE number of male HIV carriers between 18 and 24 years old has hugely increased this year, officials from Shanghai Health and Family Commission said today, ahead of the World AIDS Day falling on tomorrow.
“Males between 18 and 24 cover 20.2 percent of all local HIV cases. The figure is 318 so far this year, about 80 percent higher than last year’s 177 cases,” said Wang Panshi, vice director of Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission.
Shanghai has no reports of local cases with mother-to-infant infection in eight consecutive years.
So far this year, 27 pregnant women were tested HIV positive and have received intervention treatment.
Since the city reported its first HIV/AIDS case in 1987, Shanghai reported 17,418 HIV cases including 5,720 AIDS patients. A total of 1,263 of them have died.
