China woefully short on anesthesiologists, medical conference told

CHINA has only one-third of the anesthesiologists it needs, short 200,000 due to low salaries, heavy workloads and lack of a strong training system, experts said today at a medical conference.

There are fewer than 100,000 anesthesiologists in a nation that needs 300,000, they said. International standards call for 2.4 anaesthesiologists for each 10,000 people in developed nations.

In China, anesthesiologists have an extremely big workload due to the shortage. Eight of the specialists died due to overwork last year, said Yu Weifeng, head of the anaesthesiologist branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association.

The lack of anesthesiologists doesn't only restrict the medical development but also has a negative influence on patients' health and safety," Zhang Yanling, director of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association told the annual meeting of anaesthesiologists belonging to the association.

“Shanghai fulfilled over 1 million surgeries requiring anesthesia last year," said Xu Jianguang, director of the Shanghai Medical Doctors Association.
