Children's leukemia research center established in Shanghai

A research organization for children’s leukemia in China was established at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center yesterday.

Nineteen hospitals in 10 provinces and municipalities and the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong are involved, and experts from US-based St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a world-leading cancer hospital, have been invited to take part.

The organization will focus on genetic sequencing to study the mechanism of the disease and research acute lymphoblastic leukemia, one of the most prevalent types in children.

Though treatment in China has been improving, about 30 percent of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia relapse, a rate higher than leading hospitals such as St Jude. 

Shanghai Children’s Medical Center and St Jude set up the nation’s first international cooperation center for children’s cancer in 2011.
