Cardiovascular diseases top killer to Chinese

THERE are 290 million people suffering from cardiovascular diseases in the nation and it is top killer to Chinese. The incidence will keep rising along with the increasing number of the elderly population, health officials told a lecture launched by Jing’an District Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

It is part of a national scheme to promote the knowledge on chronic disease prevention and control.

“The high blood fat is an important risky factor for common cardiovascular disease and must be kept under well control,” said Dr Sun Jianqin from Huadong Hospital. “The key to control cholesterol is to control the low-density lipoprotein, which can accumulate inside blood vessels and then block the arteries causing infarction or stroke.”

Adults should have their blood fat checked every five years, while male over 40, women after menopause and those with other risky factors should check every year, experts said.

Experts said the public still have poor awareness on cholesterol control. “Healthy lifestyle and early intervention and treatment to high cholesterol can reduce the risk of cerebral and cardiovascular diseases,” Sun added.
