Cancer center admits patients

SINCE its official opening two months ago, the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center in Pudong New Area has admitted 46 patients from all over the country, the center said yesterday.
The center is the nation’s first and the world’s third to use such advanced forms of radiotherapy to treat cancer. It uses cutting-edge beams of protons and heavy ions to irradiate cancerous tissue without harming the healthy tissues and cells.
Of the 46 cases, 20 have tumors in the head or neck, eight in the chest, and 18 on the belly or pelvis.
The average age of the patients, who are from Shanghai, Beijing and provinces like Zhejiang and Anhui, is 55 years old. The youngest is 23 and oldest 81 years old. So far, 13 patients have finished the treatment and discharged from the center.
